What Is Moissanite and How to Choose a High‑Quality Moissanite Jewelry Piece

Moissanite has become one of the most admired gemstones in modern jewelry — and for good reason. Its brilliance surpasses that of a diamond, its durability makes it perfect for everyday wear, and its ethical origin appeals to those who value conscious beauty. But not all moissanite is created equal. The quality of the stone, the precision of the cut, and the craftsmanship of the setting all play a crucial role in how your jewelry looks and lasts.

As the founder of Jewelry Koval, I personally select and quality‑check every moissanite piece before adding it to my collection. My goal is simple: to offer jewelry that shines beautifully, feels comfortable, and meets high standards of clarity, sparkle, and durability. In this article, I’ll guide you through what moissanite really is, how to recognize a high‑quality stone, and what to look for when choosing a piece that will stay stunning for years.

What Exactly Is Moissanite?

Moissanite is a lab‑grown gemstone made from silicon carbide — a material known for its exceptional brilliance and durability. Although it was first discovered in a meteorite crater, natural moissanite is extremely rare. Today, all moissanite used in jewelry is created in controlled laboratory environments, ensuring consistent quality and ethical production.

What makes moissanite special is its fire — the way it reflects light. It has a higher refractive index than diamonds, which means it produces more colorful flashes and a more intense sparkle. For many people, this is exactly what makes moissanite so captivating.

Moissanite vs. Diamond: Key Differences

While moissanite and diamonds may look similar at first glance, they differ in several important ways:

1. Brilliance

Moissanite has a refractive index of 2.65–2.69, higher than a diamond’s 2.42. This means moissanite sparkles more intensely and shows more rainbow‑like flashes.

2. Durability

On the Mohs scale:

• Diamond: 10
• Moissanite: 9.25

Moissanite is extremely durable and suitable for everyday wear, including rings and earrings.

3. Price

Moissanite offers a luxurious look at a more accessible price point. This makes it a popular choice for gifts, engagement jewelry, and everyday elegance.

4. Ethical & Eco‑Friendly

Because moissanite is lab‑grown, it avoids the environmental and ethical concerns associated with mined stones.

How to Recognize a High‑Quality Moissanite

Not all moissanite stones are equal. When choosing a piece, pay attention to these factors:

1. Cut Quality

A well‑cut moissanite will reflect light evenly and show a balanced sparkle. Poor cuts can make the stone look dull or overly “glittery.”

2. Clarity

High‑quality moissanite should be eye‑clean — meaning no visible inclusions. Small internal marks are normal, but they shouldn’t affect the beauty of the stone.

3. Color

Modern moissanite is typically near‑colorless or colorless. Stones with a yellow or green tint are considered lower quality.

4. Setting & Metal Quality

Even the best stone needs a secure, well‑crafted setting. Hypoallergenic metals like sterling silver, gold plating, or stainless steel ensure comfort and longevity.

How I Select Moissanite Jewelry for Jewelry Koval

Every piece in my moissanite collection goes through a personal quality‑check process. I evaluate:

• Stone brilliance and fire
• Precision of the cut
• Clarity and color consistency
• Strength and comfort of the setting
• Overall craftsmanship and finish

Only pieces that meet these standards become part of the Jewelry Koval collection. This approach allows me to offer jewelry that is not only beautiful but also reliable and long‑lasting.

How to Care for Moissanite Jewelry

Moissanite is low‑maintenance, but a little care keeps it shining at its best:

• Clean with warm water and mild soap
• Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners
• Store separately to prevent scratches on the metal
• Wipe with a soft cloth after wearing

With proper care, moissanite will maintain its brilliance for decades.
